Biblical, battle-tested, real-life help for "living by faith in the Son of God" (Galatians 2:20). — Steve Fuller

My 10 Favorite Bible Verses on Faith

It’s all about faith

The Christian life is all about faith.

And when faith is strong the results are huge — joy and peace (Rom 15:13), love for others (Gal 5:6), more of the Spirit’s work in our lives (Gal 3:5), power over Satan’s attacks (Eph 6:16), and growing obedience (Heb 11:8).

So here are 10 verses to help you understand and grow in faith —

Genesis 15:6 — And Abraham believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

Like Abraham, we have all sinned and faced God’s judgment.  But because of the Cross, when we trust Jesus, God forgives all our sins and covers our imperfect lives with Jesus’ perfect righteousness.

So don’t try to be good enough to be accepted by God — you can’t.  Instead — trust Jesus to make you welcome before God.  He can — and will.

Isaiah 31:1 — Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the LORD!

Everyone has faith in something — we all rely on something to secure and satisfy us.  Israel was tempted to have faith in Egypt’s horses and chariots — but they should have had faith in God.

So ask yourself — what are you trusting — really — to secure and satisfy you?

John 6:35 — Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

Faith means turning from whatever I used to trust to satisfy me — and trusting Jesus to satisfy me.  He is the only bread of life.

When I come to Him, trusting Him to fully satisfy me in Himself, my every heart hunger and thirst will be satisfied — not in what He gives, but in who He is.

Ephesians 2:8-9 — For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

We are not saved by works — trying to impress God with our goodness.

We are saved by faith alone — trusting all that God promises to be to us in Christ Jesus.

Romans 4:20-21 — No distrust made him [Abraham] waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

For Abraham, faith meant trusting God to do what He promised.  So biblical faith focuses on promises given in God’s Word.

God has given us five main categories of promises —

  • to satisfy us fully and forever in Himself (John 6:35).
  • to forgive us through faith in Christ so we can experience His heart-satisfying presence (1Pet 3:18)
  • to enable us to obey Him so we receive even more heart-satisfaction in Him (Ezekiel 36:27)
  • to ordain every event in our lives to bring us even more heart-satisfaction in Him (2Cor 4:17)
  • to provide everything else I need in such a way that I have the greatest heart-satisfaction in Him (not in health or wealth – but in HIM) (Phil 4:19)

Learn God’s promises — and trust them.

Mark 9:24 — Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

This verse is encouraging, because it shows that we can cry out to Jesus when our faith is weak, and He will meet us and strengthen our faith.

So NEVER settle for weak faith.  Bring it to Jesus — He will strengthen you.

Romans 10:17 —  So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

How does God give us faith?  And strengthen our faith?  Through His Word.  As we take time to pray over the truth of God’s Word — He changes our hearts — giving us strength, peace, joy, and hope.

Take time to pray over the truth of God’s Word.

Ephesians 6:16 — In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.

Satan constantly shoots flaming darts at us — darts of worry, lust, discouragement, bitterness.

But this verse shows that when we pick up the shield of faith, and fight with prayer and God’s Word to trust God’s promises, God will extinguish ALL Satan’s flaming darts.

Romans 15:13 — May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

When I lack joy, peace, or hope — the problem is that I’m not believing.  I’m not trusting all that God promises to be to me in Christ Jesus.

But when I pray “help my unbelief,” and set my heart on God’s promises, the Holy Spirit will change my heart so I abound in joy, peace, and hope.

Hebrews 11:8 — By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

Obedience flows naturally from faith — because whatever I trust the most to satisfy me, I desire the most — and whatever I desire the most, I obey.

If I trust money the most — I will obey money.  If I trust Jesus the most — I will obey Jesus.  It’s not complicated  — but it IS a battle.

So FIGHT — with prayer over God’s Word — until you trust Jesus as your all-satisfying Treasure.  When you do — you will desire Jesus the most, obey Jesus the most — and be satisfied the most.

Because He IS your heart-satisfying Treasure.

    Hey Steve,

The gospel and our faith in it, requires effort, which is much different than working to earn something from God. We work at faith, but it does not earn us the grace of God. Fighting the fight of faith requires a choice of our will, that’s effort, we do put forth our energy to follow Christ.

When Abraham obeyed God he made a choice, an effort was made, faith is active. I love how you are showing us how to fight for faith by reading scripture, and to seek after God. Paul tells us to pick up the shield of faith, it’s not earning faith to make an effort to choose to take action.

I love the verses you are sharing about faith, thanks for your EFFORT!

  2. Thanks for those, Steve. My favorite faith encouraging passage is: Because of the great love with which he loved us, God made us alive together in Christ, and raised us up together and seated us together in the heavenlies in Christ in order to demonstrate in the coming ages the surpassing riches of his grace in useful kindness toward us in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:4-7). (Highest level promise in Scripture?)

    • Steve Fuller says:

      Hi Doug —

Good to hear from you again.

And I’m so glad you mentioned Eph 2:4-7 — it very well might be the highest-level promise in Scripture. To think that God’s purpose in saving me and you is to give an eternal display of His grace and kindness — wow.

Thanks for mentioning that verse — very encouraging!

One of my favorite “weapons” of faith:
Romans 8:32 – He who did not spare His own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give him all things?

  11. Dan7005 says:

    Steve,
This is a great selection of Bible verses and we share many favorites! Another of my favorites is 1 Cor 6:9-11, with the emphasis on verse 11! “And such WERE some of you, but you were washed…”
    -Dan

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 ESV)

  12. chrissy orourke says:

seek thee first the kingdom of god…

  16. chrissy orourke says:

Hi steve my life challenges are huge. Health issues financial lack family dysfunction amd never ending attacks from the enemy of our lord. Seems the more you love jesus and witness for him the harder satan tries to destroy our faith but im standing on the word of god and proclaim that despite my circumstances that all things work together for good for those who love him. I love him with all my heart mind soul and strength. i trust him with everything and praise him always. god bless everyone dont give up.

  17. Sonia says:

Hi Steve, I’ve been reading Hebrews 11. The whole chapter is an expose’ of great people of faith. V39 says that they are known for their faith, but none of them received what God had promised. They died looking forward to that promise. We have actually received the promise of God’s sacrificial love, forgiveness & acceptance and yet it still seems to be so hard to exercise faith in this world of instant gratification. Surely, if the people of old could trust God without this knowledge, we can even more so with it. I am so very encouraged by their examples of faith & trust in our glorious Savior.

  18. Elijah says:

Thank you for helping me discover this spiritual meal.

    Blessings,
    Sashi

  22. Daniel O'Toole says:

Thanks for the words. My faith is week at times, and because of my own fault I am unemployed after 25 years. It’s tough and I often feel that my sins are not forgiven, and my pride is bad, I put out hundreds of resumes and had seven interviews but still nothing. I wonder how I can serve God in being with out income to even tide, people are in need of healing and suffering, and I wake up to see what’s next and it feels bad, I don’t feel like a man, I live off of my wife and she is on disability, please pray for me a job, I’m not positive and I know what MIRACLES GOD can do, and I can testify, but not sure what he wants, feeling low and i don’t want to feel like a bum.

    • Steve Fuller says:

      Hi Daniel,

Thank you for sharing your story. I would encourage you to keep looking to Jesus, trusting Him to forgive all your sins and to take care of your every need.

Are you part of a church which some trusted brothers in Christ who can pray for you? I find that very important during hard times.

God will be faithful to all His promises Daniel, whether that means providing a job soon or later or whatever He has planned. He will give you wisdom, He will guide you, He will satisfy you and encourage you.

I will pray for you right now. Please keep me posted on what God does.

      In Christ,

      Steve Fuller

  25. Vu says:

    Hi Steve:

Thank you for sharing with us these encouraging biblical verses. Facing the seemingly insurmountable health problem, I naturally became discouraged and my faith started to waiver. However, John 6:35 and Ephesian 6:16 fuel my hope and ignite my desire to seek refuge and trust in the lord Jesus Christ. Please keep me your prayers.

    • Steve Fuller says:

      Hi Vu,

I will pray for you right now. I use John 6:35 and Eph 6:16 often — what precious truths from God’s Word! Keep fighting the fight of faith — God will be faithful to all His promises.

      In Christ,

      Steve Fuller

  26. Mimi says:

    Hello Steve,

The more I go through your blog, the more the Holy Spirit is changing my heart. My favourite verse of faith so far is Mark 9:23b – Everything is possible for the one who believes.

    Be blessed,
    Mimi

  27. John Graham says:

I never understood what faith was until I was told the root of the word means, persuaded, so faith is being persuaded, and not just believing or knowing. Let me give you an example. as a Boy Scout of 16yrs, I had to abseil off a dam. I was high up! It was in the days before people wore harness etc, just a nylon safety rope around my waist and the nylon rope I was going to slide down, around and across my back. These ropes I knew, I believed had a breaking point of two and a half tons I was perfectly safe even if I should lose control. But believing I was safe and being persuaded I was safe were two different matters. And it took a lot of evangelizing by the instructor before I would take that leap into space. And strangely when I had to abseil off a higher point, it required a bit more faith, I had to be persuaded again that it was just as safe. and that is how God tests and increases our faith.

  28. Grace mutesi says:

God bless you, greater men and women of God strong in faith, I’m also blessed for I have not remained the same.

  29. Brian says:

John 3:16. My grandpas favorite and mine as well. It was everything he stood for. When im feeling down i always say those powerful words. For god so loved the world.. It gets me thinking of everything he tought me and strengthens my faith to extremes. I know if i belive in jesus, i will be in the kingdom of heaven and live forever.

  30. Leonarlyn Igot says:

Romans 10:17 — So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. – This is my favorite bible verse of all time!

  31. Florence says:

    Thanks for those encouraging verses.

  32. emmanuel says:

one more thing i would like to add is… please we should learn to use the word of God in prayers, whatever may seems to be the problem apply and quote the scripture(s) regarding that situation, that is reminding God of His promises towards that predicament and have faith it will definately be conquered.

  33. James jamal says:

    Honestly this is wonderful!

  34. Penny says:

God is speaking and I know my faith is weak. There is too much opposition and challenges and truly I’m overwhelmed. I love Jesus and know HE is in control but yet, my emotions, my flesh my thoughts just fight this wonderful God and I can feel the resistance in my heart because I don’t understand why these issues come and yet, I’m praying and serving Him with all my heart. Well, obviously I can see my lack of joy and peace…my husband unstable with work since we moved to a new house 6 years ago and we have 3 children while I’m part-time, heavily in debt and honestly, my heart has gone rather cold but in silence. I don’t blame anyone…I need help and I’ve been saved since 2001 there are lessons to be learned I guess but God is still faithful and good in all things. Thank you for the encouraging message. God bless.

  35. Emmanuel Augustine says:

Mine is just John 3:16,it carries a powerful message that touches my heart in abundance.

  36. Taja Backus says:

I pray everyday for strength knowledge wisdom love and faith. Without that it’s hopeless.

    Mark 5:34
    Mark 10:52
    Luke 8:48
    Luke 17:19

Obviously, they need to be read with the preceding versus for full context.
