Post How does faith change my desires and actions?

Here's what my father taught me, which I believe sums up God's Word: Whatever I trust the most to satisfy me, I will desire the most (Matt 6:21, for example); and whatever I desire the most, I will obey (Matt 13:44, for example).

I've used the illustration of surfing. When I was in high school, I trusted surfing to satisfy me. So I automatically desired surfing -- rejoicing when I could surf and feeling peace when I knew I was on my way to surf.

And because I trusted surfing to satisfy me, I automatically obeyed surfing. For example, I gladly woke up early to surf (laying down the lesser pleasures of staying up late the night before).

This is so helpful in understanding faith, because it shows that when I am not desiring or obeying Christ, it's because I'm trusting something else to satisfy me. THAT's the issue. THAT's where the battle must be fought.

Is this as helpful to the rest of you as it is to me? Why or why not?

Sorry for the delay in responding -- I lost track of your important question.

Check the section of the website called "check here for more help" to find articles on peace and joy. A couple of the articles deal with how faith produces peace and joy. Especially check one called "The Faith-Joy Connection" and one called "The Peace of Christ.

Part of the good news about Jesus is that you don't need 100% faith. If you will look to him, even with weak faith, confessing your sin and asking him to help you, he will help you. Rom 10:17 says that faith comes through hearing God's Word. So take time to pray earnestly over God's Word. As you do so, Jesus will strengthen your faith.

But the Christian life is not about having perfectly strong faith. It's about having even weak faith in a perfectly strong Savior.
