Struggling? Here’s a Worship Video That Can Help

You Are My Strong Tower

Struggling?

It happens.  Prayers go unanswered.  Problems multiply.  People disappoint.  God seems distant.

And we struggle — to believe, to trust, to hope, to love.

So what can we do?

David Struggled

David wrote Psalm 61 when he was struggling.  We don’t know the details, but he says he felt faint (weak and feeble) and like he was at the end of the earth (far from God).

So what does he do?  He prays.  But isn’t he feeling far from God?  Yes.  But he prays anyway.

Distance from God is not overcome by waiting, but by praying.

And what does he pray when he’s struggling?

A Prayer for Strugglers

Here’s what he prays in Psalm 61:1-3 —

  1. Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer;
  2. from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I,
  3. for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.

First, David asks God to hear his prayer.  It’s humbling, and strengthening, to ask God to hear us.  And when we come to God in Jesus’ name, and ask him to hear, he always says “Yes; gladly.”

Second, David tells God how he’s feeling — like he’s at the end of the earth (far from God), feeling faint (weak and struggling spiritually).

Third, David asks God to take him by the hand and lead him to the rock that is higher than his trials, problems, and enemies.  This rock is God himself.

Fourth, David affirms that God has been his refuge and strong tower against the enemy.  This would strengthen his faith that God will once again meet him and help him and be his refuge and strong tower.

Try This

Follow the steps of David’s prayer.

And when you get to the last step, of affirming God as your refuge and strong tower, use this worship video.

It’s the Kutless song “You Are My Strong Tower.”  I found it deeply encouraging.  I hope you will as well.

Great and timely post. As a vocalist/drummer on our worship team I see every week both the struggles to worship and the benefits of it even when seemingly forced. I’m convinced that those who truly make their desires to be more like Christ known through prayer are often tested beyond anything they would have expected and the silence can be deafening. Sometimes during worship there are just no more words to offer and little voice left with which to offer praise because of the severity of the testing and growing process. I have also found that it is those same times when worship can deliver the most healing and comfort.
