Promise Keepers

I first heard this version of “A Mighty Fortress” at a Promise Keepers conference years ago.

It starts off with a traditional organ and men’s choir — but then busts loose after the first verse.

Biblical truth

There are lots of Scriptures which describe God as our fortress.

One of them is Psalm 18:2 —

The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

What this means

For God to be our fortress means that He will protect us from all that could harm us.

This does not mean He will keep us from all trials or temptations.

In fact, He promises that we will face those (John 16:33; 1Cor 10:13).

But it means that when we take refuge in Him — we will be protected from anything that could take us from Him.

This is the best news in the world — because God Himself is our all-satisfying Treasure (Mat 13:44).

Here are some of my favorite lines —

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing.

Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also, the body they may kill, God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever!

And tho this world with devils filled should threaten to undo us, we will not fear for God has willed His truth to triumph through us.

A mighty fortress, a mighty fortress is our God!

(And in case you are wondering, a “bulwark” is a wall built for defense.)
